Algeria Re-elected for the Sixth Consecutive Term to the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE).

Algeria participated in the 7th Conference of the States Parties to the Pelindaba Treaty, held on 25–26 June 2026 at the headquarters of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa. The Conference focused on strengthening the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty, consolidating Africa’s status as a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone, and promoting the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology in support of sustainable development.

The Algerian delegation was led by H.E. Mr. Mohamed Khaled, Ambassador of Algeria and Permanent Representative to the African Union, and included representatives of the Ministry of National Defence, the National Authority for Nuclear Safety and Security (ANSSN), and the Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA).

Dr. Abdelhamid Mellah, Commissioner for Atomic Energy, participated in the Conference in his capacity as Algeria’s Commissioner to the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE). He contributed to discussions on AFCONE’s 2026-2028 programme of work.

During the Conference, Algeria reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the objectives and principles of the Pelindaba Treaty, nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament, and the strengthening of nuclear safety and security. The delegation also highlighted the importance of the peaceful applications of nuclear technology in healthcare, agriculture, water resource management and energy.

The Conference also witnessed the election of new members of AFCONE. Algeria was re-elected for the sixth consecutive term as a member of the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), reflecting the continued confidence of the States Parties in Algeria and recognition of its significant contribution to the implementation of the Pelindaba Treaty and the promotion of regional cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear technology.

This renewed mandate further confirms Algeria’s prominent role within African institutions and its continued commitment to peace, security and sustainable development across the continent.
