THE COMMISSIONER
The Commissioner's word
First and foremost, I would like to thank you for your interest in the Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) by visiting our website at www.comena.dz.
I am particularly proud to present to you an institution that, in the course of its mission, has built up a solid experience in the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Today, COMENA stands as a center of scientific and technological excellence at the service of national development.
Founded in 1996, with the primary mission of designing and implementing the national policy for the promotion and development of nuclear energy and technologies, COMENA currently manages four nuclear research centers, a training and nuclear safety support center, and an Algerian institute for nuclear engineering training. COMENA’s research centers are equipped with basic nuclear facilities, R&D laboratories, training structures, and a qualified workforce of researchers, engineers, and technicians in nuclear science, technology, and engineering.
With its unique infrastructure and the commitment of its staff to excellence, and thanks to the strong support of the country’s highest authorities, COMENA stands alongside its national partners, collaborating with them and supporting their efforts to ensure a dynamic balance between the promotion of peaceful nuclear energy uses and the implementation of strict and effective nuclear safety and security measures. These efforts extend to key areas such as the development of the agricultural sector, the valorization of water resources, improving healthcare services, preserving natural resources, and even electricity production.
Strengthening national capacity for economic diversification, meeting development challenges, and addressing the needs of various sectors where nuclear science and technology can play a pivotal role are key objectives that COMENA seeks to achieve through its program.
This program, grounded in scientific research and technological development, also aims to build national expertise in the highly specialized field of nuclear technology. It strives to fully contribute to the establishment of strategic and technological decisions for our country and ensure their successful implementation.
It is clear that the evolution of national development priorities requires the mobilization of scientific, technological, and industrial capacities, which in turn demands the availability of highly specialized human resources.
To this end, regional and international cooperation has proven to be essential in promoting and optimizing efforts to build on achievements and make further advancements. The progress made by our country through technical cooperation programs with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which COMENA manages and coordinates with national socio-economic sectors, exemplifies the relevance of this approach.
The establishment of basic infrastructure, the development of multidisciplinary expertise, and the promotion of our most advanced laboratories as regional centers of excellence have enabled Algeria to occupy a leading position in the African continent in the field of nuclear science and technology. In this context, COMENA tirelessly works to enhance the activities of recognized institutions as centers of excellence, offering services and expertise, and to foster the emergence of new centers, especially in areas not yet covered. The cooperation agreement between COMENA and the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Department further confirms the central role played by our institution and its recognition as a privileged partner of the Agency.
With core values such as “self-reliance,” excellence in service to development, and openness to high-value collaborations, COMENA focuses its efforts on long-term goals to modernize and strengthen existing nuclear infrastructure, transforming it into a high-performing technological platform, and reinforcing the regulatory framework governing nuclear safety and security.
