Multilateral Cooperation

On the multilateral level, most of the cooperation activities are carried out with the International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA – and with the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization – CTBTO.

The International Atomic Energy Agency:

Algeria was admitted as a Member State of the IAEA on December 24, 1963.

A sustained technical cooperation program is conducted with the IAEA in order to benefit from adequate expertise, equipment in support of research and development activities and the training of human resources in the field of peaceful uses of energy and nuclear techniques for socio-economic development purposes.

The technical cooperation program between Algeria and the IAEA covers a wide range of activities and aims mainly to develop new techniques around nuclear installations and to promote nuclear applications in the fields of medicine, food and agriculture, exploitation of water resources and industry.

Cooperation projects with the IAEA offer the opportunity to benefit from expert services, acquire equipment and train scientific and technical personnel.

Algeria actively participates in the regional program defined within the framework of the AFRA Agreement, in particular by providing the AFRA management with national expertise, participating in regional projects, organizing regional workshops and courses in Algeria, making national nuclear infrastructures available to countries in the African region and contributing national specialists through expert missions.

Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization:

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is a multilateral agreement aimed at banning all nuclear weapons testing or any other type of nuclear explosion. Its entry into force is conditional on the ratification of 44 States (including Algeria) having nuclear power or research reactors and having participated in the 1996 Conference on Disarmament. Algeria ratified the CTBT on July 11, 2003.

From May 6 to 10, 2018, Algeria hosted the 2018 international workshop of National Data Centers (NDCs) – 2018 NDC Workshop – organized by the Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) in cooperation with the Provisional Technical Secretariat (STP) of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
