On a historic and loyal day, Thursday, July 3, 2025, the Nuclear Research Center of Draria was renamed in honor of the chahid and hero Hachimi Zoulim, in accordance with the provisions of Decision No. 4321 of August 13, 2024, which announced the creation of a provincial commission tasked with studying and ruling on proposals for the naming or renaming of the commune of Draria. This landmark event, which links the legacy of the Algerian revolution to the future of scientific research, took place in the presence of the Commissioner of Atomic Energy, the Deputy Wali of the administrative district of Draria, the President of the communal popular assembly of Draria, the Secretary of the Organization of the Sons of chouhada of the district of Draria, Mr. Zoulim Abdelmadjid, son of the chahid, as well as officials from the Atomic Energy Commission, the Nuclear Research Center of Draria, the Algerian Institute for Nuclear Engineering Training, and the Nuclear Security Training and Support Center.
This initiative aims to perpetuate the national memory and pay tribute to the Algerian martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence and freedom of their country. The choice of the name of the chahid Hachimi Zoulim for a center of this stature reflects Algeria’s attachment to its principles and glorious history, and confirms that science and knowledge are the continuation of the spirit of struggle to build a bright future.
This exceptional hero, the chahid Hachimi Zoulim, was born on November 11, 1932, in the Aïn El Hammam region of Tizi Ouzou. The eldest son of a modest and conservative family, he received his early education at the koutoubia, where he memorized the entire Quran. At the same time, he completed his primary education and graduated with honors and distinction. He then moved to Constantine to continue his studies at the Abdelhamid Ben Badis Institute. After obtaining his higher diploma from this institute, he returned to his region where he was appointed judge at the court of Aïn El Hammam.
He fought from the beginning of the war of independence, working in the utmost secrecy to raise awareness among citizens and encourage them to support the revolution.
In 1957, after being discovered by the colonizers, he joined the ranks of the National Liberation Army and was transferred to western Algeria, specifically to the vicinity of Tlemcen, in the fifth region of the fifth historic wilaya, where he was then known as Si Abderrazak.
Due to his scientific skills, particularly in the judicial and religious fields, the command appointed him judge for legal matters. The chahid thus held several positions and ranks before being promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1958.
The heroic chahid participated in several battles and operations in the region, which led to his martyrdom during the battle of “Djebel El Assas” in 1959 in the vicinity of Tlemcen.
After independence, in 1964, the remains of the martyr Hachimi Zoulim were transferred to his hometown where he was reburied.
The ceremony was marked by the unveiling of an elegant commemorative plaque bearing the name of the chahid hero at the entrance to the center, as a tribute to him and to encourage future generations to continue the march of science and construction.
Naming the nuclear research center of Draria after the chahid Hachimi Zoulim is an important step in the process of honoring the memory of the homeland and promoting the values of sacrifice and self-giving, while emphasizing the importance of science and scientific research in building the Algeria of tomorrow.
Glory and immortality to our virtuous martyrs.
Long live Algeria!
